Professor Nikki Usher will lecture about the challenges of fighting misinformation about COVID-19 on a local level using research from the PPLN-IL (Platforms, Politics, and Local News in Illinois) project. Professor Usher will specifically highlight the increasing amount of local politicians who use social media to weaponize political issues as a way to boost their careers, as well as how big tech is concerned about profit instead of democracy.
