The Imperfect Saxophone: Not Just a Clown’s Instrument

Monday, December 13, 2021 – Friday, December 9, 2022, All Day, 240 Harding Band Building, Champaign, IL.

This recurring exhibit, hosted by The Sousa Archives, examines America’s complicated relationship with the saxophone during the “saxophone craze” (between the years 1900 and 1930). This exhibit highlights the saxophone’s musical beginnings (as many first viewed the instrument as a clown’s implement) and showcases how different musicians and artists made it a truly unique and iconic instrument.
